The Queen's Gambit
About
The Queen’s Gambit, a Netflix miniseries adapted from the novel of the same name published in 1983 and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, whom we recognize from many series and films, tells the story of an orphaned chess prodigy named Beth Harmon. In an orphanage in Kentucky during the 1950s, a little girl is observed achieving great things in chess. At just eight years old, Beth Harmon has a quiet, introverted, sullen, and abrasive personality. However, the first game of chess she plays with the janitor in the basement of the orphanage changes her life. This game brings out her emotions and thoughts and makes her feel in control. Chess becomes more than just a game for her; her extraordinary mastery over the pieces on a 64-square chessboard turns into an obsession. By the time she is sixteen and competing in the US Open Championship, as Beth Harmon improves herself remarkably, the dangers in her life begin to rise, and the idea of escaping becomes appealing. Throughout her life journey, this chess prodigy faces major problems such as gender discrimination, addiction, and family issues.
